  • Opinion: Why Real Madrid appointing Santiago Solari as a permanent manager was a big mistake

Real Madrid season have been disastrous and well below expectation.

After winning three successive Uefa champions league title under the guidance of Zinedine Zidane , a lot was expected at the Barnabeu from successor Julian  Lupetegui but the Spaniard was  unable to replicate the same success enjoyed the french boss .

After  their 5-1 humiliation by their arch rival Barcelona during their first el-classico of the season ,Julian Lopetegui was released from his duty and youth team coach Santiago Solari was installed as a caretaker boss till the end of the season but after just four good outing with the Los Blancos ,he {Solari} was  able to convince the club board that he can handle the job on permanent basis .

After just 28 games since taking over as permanent manager , Real Madrid record just 18 wins , 8 losses and 2 draws , a result that sees the Los Blancos knocked out of the champions league by Ajax  Amsterdam in the round of 16{5-3} on aggregate ,this is  the first time Real Madrid are knocked out in the champions league after winning the first leg away from home since 1994 against Odense Bollklub and the first time a defending champions are knocked out in the second round since Chelsea in 2012/2013 .

After being knocked out in the copa del rey semifinal by their fierce rival Barcelona , their chance of winning silverware remain very slim with only la liga left to fight for but they are already 12 points behind the league leader Barcelona .

Appointing Santiago Solari as a permanent coach should have be at the end of the season after a proper assessment considering his inexperience on top level .

His stint with the club youth team was not so successful , taking charge of 82 games with the club Castilla with just 32 wins , 29 losses  and 25 draws.

Though top coaches like  Pep Guadiola and Zinedine Zidaned took the same step on their way to becoming a top manager , Solari was not at same level ,.

During Guadiola and Zidane's reign at Barcelona and Real Madrid , they were packed with quality players who are on top of their games but during Lopetegui reign , he struggled due to the club poor run of form and the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo who left for Italian giant Juventus.

Failure to brings in a  replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer is one of the key factor for the Blancos failure this season with the club linked with a move for Chelsea star Eden Hazard  and former Barcelona forward Neymar Jr who is said to be willing to join in the summer.

With the club bringing back Zidane into the hot seat , the los blancos will hope to qualify for uefa champions league next season.
